Featured Client - Greenfern Les Asperges

After spending informative years working at Boyds Asparagus, Bill set up Greenfern Asparagus at 491 Bruntwood Road concentrating on export and local markets.  During that period he also packed for two local organic growers and once they moved away they, as a family, decided to also become organic on part of their land growing both asparagus and globe artichokes.

With the export market basically stopping and the local market often being flooded with asparagus they downgraded areas and decided to concentrate on organic farming along with introducing white asparagus along with the purple variety.

Over the last few years they have been couriering boxes of asparagus and artichokes to many restaurants and individuals around New Zealand and many Europeans are excited to finally being able to purchase the "White Gold" in New Zealand.

When the Cambridge Farmers Market started in our beautiful town square, Irene started selling their product and has enjoyed watching it develop into what has become a very vibrant market and she really enjoys the atmosphere of the market.  Along with Cambridge Markets, Irene or one of their helpers can be seen at the Hamilton Farmers Market and their daughter Kiely makes the journey over every Friday to take asparagus back to the amazing Tauranga Farmers Market on Saturday mornings,

To add to family involvement, son Hadyn is now working full time and is bringing new ideas and produce such as baby carrots, baby beetroot, baby leeks along with others, which is mainly sold at their packhouse or markets

Further to this they now have around 200 citrus trees just coming into production. After over 40 years being involved in the asparagus industry Bill will be handing the business over to Hadyn in due course (with some contact of course) and is looking forward to taking Irene back to Europe to do another Camino!!

Greenfern's Fresh products

Once the asparagus is harvested, it’s packaged and loaded for delivery that afternoon, before being stored in local Bidfresh outlets overnight, and collected for delivery to customers by 5am, that is just 48 hours between harvest and delivery to customers.

Globe artichokes are also their speciality and are available in different sizes.

Greenfern is located between Hamilton and Cambridge and is open for business from 8am to 6pm.

For orders and enquiries please contact Bill & Irene, or visit their Website for more information (and tasty recipes).
